Daigo is a small town in northern Ibaraki Prefecture, close to the border with Fukushima, surrounded by forested mountains and the Kuji River. Its best-known sight is Fukuroda Falls, a 120-metre-high waterfall that drops over four tiers and changes considerably with the seasons, from fresh greenery in spring and autumn foliage to partially frozen cascades during particularly cold winters. Walking paths and viewing platforms provide different perspectives of the falls, while the surrounding hills offer further hiking opportunities for travellers who want to spend more time outdoors. The town is also served by the JR Suigun Line, a scenic rural railway running through the countryside between Mito and Fukushima Prefecture.
Daigo has a strong onsen tradition, with small hot-spring inns scattered around the town and surrounding valleys, making it a good choice for travellers who prefer a slower stay in the countryside. Visitors can also explore local food producers and try regional specialities including konnyaku, yuba and apples grown in the surrounding area. For something less traditional, Daigo has also developed a growing sauna culture, including outdoor sauna experiences that make use of the area's rivers and natural surroundings. Combining Fukuroda Falls with walking, local food and an overnight stay at an onsen ryokan gives travellers a reason to spend more than a few hours here and experience a quieter, rural part of Ibaraki.
