Goroka sits in Eastern Highlands province and is the main town and commercial district with a flourishing coffee trade. Famous for the Goroka Show which takes place every September attracting hordes of international visitors and locals from many parts of the country Goroka also has a wealth of experiences to enjoy outside the show dates. Village encounters tend to sit top of the list with the chance to meet the famous Asaro mudmen plus other traditional villages to experience their way of life. Hike to the top of Mt Gurukopa for splendid views of the surrounding valleys often dotted with the fires of villagers and discover the JK McCarthy Museum to see examples of local weapons, pottery and jewellery. The region also offers the chance to undertake longer treks passing through remote village communities.
