Ibusuki Holidays

Ibusuki sits on the coast of Kagoshima Prefecture at the southern end of Kyushu, in an area shaped by volcanic activity. It is particularly known for its natural hot springs and unusual sand baths, where visitors are buried up to the neck in naturally heated volcanic sand before soaking in an onsen. Beyond the hot springs, the coastline looks across Kagoshima Bay towards the surrounding volcanic landscape, while nearby Lake Ikeda, Kyushu’s largest crater lake, offers views towards the distinctive cone of Mount Kaimon. Travellers who prefer to explore on foot can follow coastal and countryside trails, including sections of the Kyushu Olle walking routes.

Ibusuki also makes a good base for exploring the southern Satsuma Peninsula. Active travellers can hike Mount Kaimon, often called the “Satsuma Fuji” because of its symmetrical shape, while those looking for a slower day can visit gardens, lakes and small coastal communities around the peninsula. At Chiringashima, a sandbar appears at low tide during certain times of the year, allowing visitors to walk across the sea to the otherwise uninhabited island. With hot springs, walking and volcanic scenery all within a relatively small area, Ibusuki works particularly well for travellers wanting to combine time outdoors with a slower-paced stay away from Japan’s larger cities.
