Takachiho is a small mountain town in Miyazaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, best known for its dramatic gorge and its connections to some of Japan’s oldest myths. Takachiho Gorge was formed by volcanic activity from nearby Mount Aso, leaving steep basalt cliffs on either side of the Gokase River. Visitors can follow the walking trail along the gorge or hire a rowing boat to see the cliffs and Manai Falls from the water. The surrounding countryside is well suited to travellers who enjoy being outdoors, with forest walks, viewpoints and quiet rural scenery, while the town itself is compact enough to explore at a relaxed pace.
Takachiho is also an important place in Japanese mythology, particularly stories surrounding Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess, who is said to have hidden in a cave at nearby Amano Iwato. Visitors can explore Amano Iwato Shrine and walk down to Amano Yasukawara, a riverside cave where thousands of small stone stacks have been left by visitors. In the evening, Takachiho Shrine hosts performances of traditional Yokagura dance, presenting selected scenes from local myths that have been performed in the region for generations. This combination of walking, distinctive landscapes and living religious traditions makes Takachiho particularly interesting for travellers who want to understand more about rural Kyushu and the stories that have shaped Japanese culture.
