This morning head out of the city to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels complex through countryside which was once a stronghold for the Vietcong. Explore the tunnels and learn about how the Vietcong were often forced to live underground for extended periods. Return to the city for the afternoon and evening at leisure. (B)
Depart the hotel and drive to Cai Be. Board the Bassac, a deluxe wooden rice barge restored for overnight cruising. Enjoy lunch on the sundeck as the boat heads down the Tien Giang River. Relax and watch the landscape of rice fields, sugar cane and forests pass you by. Visit Co Chien or Mang Thit villages, meet some of the local people and enjoy their hospitality. Breakfast begins from 0630am as the ship cruises to the Tra On floating market. Continue onwards to the Cai Rang and transfer onto a local boat to visit the floating market, the nearby arroyos and gardens. Disembark and drive to the nearby Stork Sanctuary to see thousands of storks nesting in a beautiful natural environment. Arrive in Chau Doc around lunchtime. After breakfast drive to the South Gate of Angkor Thom to begin exploring the centrepiece of this ancient city, the Bayon. The morning tour also visits the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of Elephants and Terrace of Leper Kings. Continue to Ta Prohm sitting swallowed by jungle and with a labyrinth of stone hallways before stopping for lunch. This afternoon visit Preah Khan and magnificent Angkor Wat which is regarded by many as the largest religious building in the world. (B,L)
Today head to the exquisite Banteay Srey, or “Citadel of the Woman”, home to some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art, followed by a tour of Banteay Samre. After lunch visit Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia and an important source of income for the floating villages who rely on the fishing industry. Return to the city via Artisans d'Angkor, a development project teaching young adults local skills. This evening head to the big top for a performance at Phare, the Cambodian Circus, and marvel at displays of high flying, tight-rope walking, contortion and juggling. (B,L)
