North Iceland Winter Fly-drive

Fly directly from London Gatwick to Akureyri, a charming town nestled in northern Iceland, known for its picturesque landscapes, vibrant cultural scene and friendly atmosphere. Collect the rental car and drive through the farmlands of north west Iceland to the Skagafjörður area, which is often referred to as the 'horse country of Iceland'. Today drive around Tröllaskagi peninsula passing through Siglufjörður - a town which bloomed in the 1950‘s when herring fishing was the main industry and the town played a key role in the export of herring. Continue via Akureyri and stop at the magnificent Goðafoss waterfall, "the waterfall of the gods', to admire its powerful cascades plunging into a serene basin. Explore the area around Lake Mývatn, a panoramic patchwork of black lava fields, blue lakes and green hillsides, before reaching Dettifoss waterfall, Europe's most powerful waterfall. Visit the fishing town of Húsavík and continue travelling back to Akureyri along the north coast. Overnight in Akureyri for the next two nights. (B) (250 km)

Spend the day exploring Akureyri under your own steam. Akureyri, often tagged with labels such as ‘capital of North Iceland’, lies at the base of Eyjafjörður and clings to one hillside before spilling on to a small stretch of land that seems to float upon the shimmering water – hence the name ‘Akur-eyri, or ‘the field upon the shoreline’. Today also experience North Iceland's newest geothermal spa - Forest Lagoon, located a few minutes drive from Akureyri in Vaðlaskógur forest.
