Spend the day at leisure to explore Akureyri under your own steam or embark on an optional excursion*. Akureyri, often tagged with labels such as ‘capital of North Iceland’, lies at the base of Eyjafjordur, surrounded on either side by a sloping wall of snow-capped mountains. The town clings to one hillside before spilling on to a small stretch of land that seems to float upon the shimmering water – hence the name ‘Akur-eyri, or ‘the field upon the shoreline’. (B)
