Oita Holidays

Oita Prefecture sits on the eastern side of Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island, and is best known for its volcanic landscapes and hot springs. Beppu is the main centre for onsen, with steaming vents, mineral-rich pools and the colourful hot springs of the Hells of Beppu, while nearby Yufuin offers a quieter base surrounded by mountains. Those interested in nature can walk around Mount Yufu, explore the Kuju mountain range or visit the dramatic Harajiri Falls. Oita works particularly well for travellers who want to spend time outdoors without building an itinerary around strenuous hiking, with plenty of shorter walks, scenic viewpoints and hot-spring stops.

There is also much more to the prefecture than its onsen. On the Kunisaki Peninsula, centuries-old temples and stone Buddhist carvings sit among forests and rural villages, with walking routes following paths once used by monks. Culture-focused travellers can visit Usuki’s collection of stone Buddhas, explore the former samurai district of Kitsuki or spend time in Taketa, a historic castle town overlooked by the ruins of Oka Castle. Food is another reason to explore, from Oita’s kabosu citrus and local seafood to toriten, the prefecture’s take on chicken tempura. Together, these experiences make Oita a good choice for travellers looking beyond Japan’s better-known cities and wanting a mix of countryside, history, food and time in an onsen.
