Fly independently to Oslo. On arrival, transfer to your hotel and check in for one night. Visit the AE Expeditions hospitality desk to collect your luggage cabin tags and speak with your ground operations team, who may have information to share with you about pre-embarkation or to provide you with information about where to dine, withdraw cash or purchase last-minute items from a local pharmacy or supermarket.
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before transferring to the airport for your charter flight to Longyearbyen. On arrival, explore the town on a guided excursion including a visit to Svalbard Museum to learn more about Longyearbyen’s fascinating history. Explore Camp Barentz and enjoy a presentation in a large ‘lavvo’ - a traditional building common in northern Norway. In the late afternoon, transfer directly to the pier to embark the Greg Mortimer and settle into your cabin before setting sail. (D)
Spend three days exploring the magnificent Svalbard archipelago. Get ready to sail by breathtaking fjords, majestic mountain ranges, and a polar desert brimming with fascinating fossils, all woven into the legendary tales of early explorers. Witness walruses basking on the sea ice or lounging on stunning beaches and polar bears on the pack ice. On land, set off on exhilarating walks across the tundra, which bursts with vibrant wildflowers. Visit dramatic cliffs alive with nesting guillemots and puffins, as well as scree slopes teeming with Svalbard’s largest colonies of little auks. For the adventurous at heart, optional activities such as kayaking are available whenever conditions allow - including exciting polar plunge opportunities. (B,L,D)

Sail towards the coast of East Greenland, where you may spot whales feeding in the rich waters of the north. As you approach East Greenland, be prepared to encounter more pack ice and perhaps spot seals and a variety of seabirds, including the northern fulmar and Brünnich’s guillemot. The powerful, icy currents have isolated East Greenland from the Polar Basin, attracting a wealth of fish, seals, and whales to its waters. The combination of climatic conditions and concentration of ice create thick morning fog, which reliably dissipates in the presence of the midday sun. (B,L,D)
Today approach Jan Mayen, an extraordinary volcanic island that boasts the Beerenberg volcano, rising majestically at 2,277 metres (7,470 feet) and the northernmost active volcano in the world, with its last eruption recorded in 1985. The northern region of the island is a prime destination for spotting whales and dolphins, and it features stunning glaciers that spectacularly reach the sea. Weather permitting, land at Kvalrossbukta, a sheltered bay on the island's west coast, which serves as a vital landing site for supplying the weather station in Olonkinbyen. (B,L,D)
Continue sailing across the Denmark Strait to Ittoqqortoormiit accompanied by sea birds while keeping a close watch for whales. Enjoy informative and entertaining lectures and presentations from a team of experts, get to know your fellow expeditioners or stay active at the gym. (B,L,D)
In the next five* coming days, a host of choices are available to you, and depending on ice and weather conditions, the east coast of Greenland is yours to explore. The experienced Expedition Team, who have made countless journeys to this area, will use their expertise to tailor your itinerary on a day-to-day basis. This allows you to make the best use of the prevailing weather, ice conditions and encounters with wildlife. Generally, two landing attempts or Zodiac excursions per day are made, including cruising along spectacular ice cliffs, and following whales feeding near the surface. (B,L,D)
*Please note that in the 13-day version of the expedition departing on 17th July 2025 you'll spend three days exploring East Greenland, instead of five.
East Greenland contains some of the Arctic’s most impressive scenery. Deep fjords and narrow channels, flanked by sharp ice-clad peaks soaring up to 2,000 metres (6,562 feet), and glaciers birthing gigantic icebergs that drift throughout the fjord system, combine to create breathtaking scenes.
The tundra landscape is home to musk oxen, arctic hares and reindeer. Throughout the area there are ancient Thule archaeological sites, historical trappers’ huts, and the cabins of present-day Inuit hunters. A highlight is a visit to the Inuit village of Ittoqqortoormiit, the most isolated and northernmost permanent settlement in the region, with approximately 450 inhabitants. The community has an excellent museum, gift shop, an abundance of Greenlandic sled dogs and provides the opportunity to meet the friendly locals. (B,L,D)
Explore Scoresbysund, the world’s largest fjord and a favourite hunting ground of the local Inuit. Massive glaciers flow into this fjord, the birthplace of hundreds of majestic Greenland icebergs. North of Scoresbysund lies Kong Oskar and Kaiser Franz Josef fjords, two of the most significant fjord systems in Greenland, each one encompassing several smaller fjords and sounds. Thanks to the fertile volcanic soil and the surrounding mountains offering protection from strong winds, the area is rich in wildlife. Look skyward and you could catch a glimpse of birds, including the glaucous gull, black-legged kittiwake, northern fulmar, common raven and common eider. (B,L,D)
Reach Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord, a remote and rarely visited fjord system located within the Northeast Greenland National Park. Weather and ice permitting cruise through Kong Oskar Fjord, marvel at the geological beauty of the mountains and head south along the coast of Liverpool Land. (B,L,D)
Hikes across tundra in search of ancient graveyards and summer villages occupied 3,000 years ago by Inuit and spot musk ox, arctic hare and reindeer grazing. The maze of calm, interconnecting waterways in this area provides excellent opportunities for sea kayaking. See ring seals, perhaps catch a glimpse of the elusive narwhal, and maybe even a polar bear hunting on pack ice. (B,L,D)
Today cross the Denmark Strait to Iceland, search for whale blows and photograph the many seabirds that trail the ship in the ever-present arctic winds. (B,L,D)
Reach Reykjavík in the early morning, disembark and transfer to the airport for your flight back to the UK. (B)
