Welcome to Norway, the land of a thousand fjords. Voyage along the coast surrounded by dramatic landscapes of steep mountain sides and high mountain peaks as well as deep fjords. Few places in the world have such rugged coastlines with long branching fjords. This trip combines open stretches of sea, large, wide bays that reach inland and narrow straits between islands.

Geiranger fjord

Today, explore Bergen. We recommend a stroll through Bryggen, Bergen's atmospheric Hanseatic old town located on the harbour front, where you can also find some of the freshest seafood around at the Torget Fish Market. There are plenty of museums on offer, or escape the city on the funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen for sweeping views of the fjord-side city and the seven mountains that famously surround it. Board your Havila ship in the evening. (B)

After the first night on board, you can start your day by waving goodbye to Ålesund. This city is renowned for its art nouveau architecture with beautiful brick houses and warehouses. In Summer continue to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Geiranger Fjord, which has steep mountainsides and dramatic waterfalls. (B,L,D)

Ports: Florø - Måløy - Torvik - Ålesund - (Geiranger/ Hjorundfjorden)- Molde

Geiranger visited 1/6-31/8

Hjorundfjorden/Urke visited 1/9-31.10

Lofoten Islands

It is morning when we dock in the historic city of Trondheim, which was founded over a thousand years ago. Whilst docked here, why not visit Nidaros Cathedral. It is a landmark of the city and is one of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe. After our visit to Trondheim, the voyage continues out into an abundant archipelago and heads for northern Norway. (B,L,D)

Ports: Kristiansund - Trondheim - Rørvik

On this stretch, we mark the crossing the Arctic Circle with a ceremony and continue onward into the Arctic regions. Nature is powerful with northern Scandinavia's largest glacier, the world's strongest tidal current and encounters with the majestic sea eagle. In the evening, Lofoten's fishing villages and steep mountains await. (B,L,D)

Ports: Brønnøysund - Sandnessjøen - Nesna - Ørnes - Bodø - Stamsund - Svolvær

The voyage continues on through narrow fjords and past wild mountains to Tromsø, a city characterised by hunting and fishing. Now you have also reached the land of the Sami, Norway's indigenous people. Meeting the Sami and their reindeer while hearing about the Sami culture is a unique experience you will remember. (B,L,D)

Ports: Stokmarknes - Sortland - Risøyhamn - Harstad - Finnsnes - Tromsø - Skervøy

As far north as you can get - by land and sea. For many, the visit to the North Cape is a high point and a goal for voyages along the Norwegian coast. Up here in the polar landscape, nature is at its harshest and most desolate.   (B,L,D)

Ports: Hammerfest - Havøysund - Honningsvåg - Kjøllefjord - Mehamn - Berlevåg

Arctic Cathedral in Tromsø

You are now as far east on your voyage as you can go. The border with Russia is only a few kilometres away, and the road signs in Kirkenes are in Norwegian and Russian. You can go as far as the border on one of our excursions, or how about a visit to the Snowhotel where everything is made of ice and snow? (B.L.D)

Ports: Båtsfjord - Vardø - Vadsø - Kirkenes

The polar landscape changes as we sail towards the west and south again. The great expanses are replaced by steep peaks, and in the evening we sail into Tromsø. You can take a stroll in the midnight sun and explore the nightlife of the city dubbed "The Paris of the North". ( B,L,D)

Ports: Mehamn, Kjollefjord, Honningsvag, Havoysund, Hammerfest, Oksfjord, Skjervoy, Tromsø.

DAY 10

We return to the wild, idyllic Lofoten Islands . Beneath the jagged mountains lie chalky white sandy beaches and fishing villages with a vibrant fishing industry and locals using the coastal ships for everyday trips and transport. If the weather permits, we will enter the narrow Trollfjord. There is a strong possibility of spotting sea eagles here. (B,L,D)

Ports: Finnsnes - Harstad - Risøyhamn - Sortland - Stokmarknes - Svolvær - Stamsund

DAY 11
Atlantic Ocean Road

Now we have come so far south that we're crossing the Arctic Circle and sailing away from the sunlit nights. Here you sail past a myriad of small islands, islets and skerries and past the special mountain, Torghatten, which has a hole in the middle. If you wish, you can also go on the trip to the mountain and enter the hole. (B,L,D)

Ports: Bodø - Ørnes - Sandnessjøen - Brønnøysund - Rørvik

DAY 12

We sail through the wide Trondheim fjord that is bounded by rolling farmland on both sides and return to the coast and the open sea. You can disembark in Kristiansund and be driven along the Atlantic Ocean Road, which has been called the world's most beautiful drive. The road meanders along islets and skerries, and afterwards you can re-embark in Molde. (B,L,D)

Ports: Trondheim - Kristiansund - Molde - Ålesund.

DAY 13

The last day of the tour takes you through a diverse coastal landscape of bare rocky mountains and a maze of sounds and waterways between many islands. The great fjords and glaciers are situated inland. Bergen awaits at the end of the voyage. The ship docks at 14:45hrs in Bergen.  Make your way to the airport for your flight back to the UK. (B)

Ports: Torvik - Måløy - Florø - Bergen

Havila Cruises

Travelling the Norwegian fjords on one of Havila's voyages enables you to experience the most breath-taking views of the rugged cliffs, sea birds, harbours, and small villages that dot the entire coastline.Experience the best of Norway  in brand new, and more eco-friendly ships. Currently there are four in operation : Havila Castor, Havila Capella, Havila Pollux and, Havila Polaris. Each ship has 179 cabins and can accommodate up to 640 guests. The spacious cabins with typical Nordic décor are designed for relaxation and a good night's sleep. All cabins have free Wi-fi, USB ports, TV, Wardrobe.  On board food and drink will take you on a unique Norwegian culinary voyage. The chefs hand-pick the best raw ingredients from local Norwegian producers to create traditional and modern dishes.

The most important ingredient is sustainability.  Havila Capella (maiden voyage in December 2021) was crowned as the winner of the Next Generation Ship Award at Nor-Shipping 2022.  The four new ships are loaded with the world's largest battery pack ever installed on a passenger ship, permitting them to sail through vulnerable fjords, such as the world heritage Geirangerfjord, for four hours nonstop with zero emissions. The batteries are charged with clean hydropower ashore, and when the batteries are not being used they run on LNG (liquid natural gas) which – along with general efficient hybrid operation – cuts CO2 emissions by around 40 per cent.
