If a North Korea tour isn’t off the beaten track enough for you already, make some time for a visit to the gritty city of Haeju. Having only opened to tourists two years ago a stopover here is a real pioneering experience and one that offers a unique and genuine taste of the real North Korea. Stay in the Haeju Hotel, conveniently located right on the town square for the morning air raid siren wake up call, before exploring this isolated city and soak up some Korean authenticity.
Haeju is primarily used as a springboard into the nearby picturesque countryside where sparkling waterfalls, scenic valleys and rustic settlements make for some excellent hikes and photo opportunities. 100km from Pyongyang, Haeju is also within easy distance of the port city of Nampo and Sarowan and is usually combined with these cities for a couple days’ sightseeing.
