Iwakuni Holidays

Iwakuni is a historic castle town in eastern Yamaguchi Prefecture, best known for the elegant Kintai Bridge, one of Japan’s most celebrated wooden bridges. Spanning the Nishiki River with five graceful arches, the bridge has been rebuilt using traditional methods for centuries and remains the town’s defining landmark. Nearby, Iwakuni Castle sits atop Mount Shiroyama, reached by ropeway, offering views across the river, town and surrounding countryside. The former samurai district at the foot of the mountain adds further insight into Iwakuni’s feudal past.

The town’s appeal lies in its balance of history and gentle outdoor scenery. Riverside walks, seasonal cherry blossoms and quiet streets make it an easy place to explore at a relaxed pace. Cultural attractions such as local craft workshops and small museums sit alongside simple cafés and family-run restaurants. With its compact layout and strong sense of place, Iwakuni suits travellers interested in traditional architecture, scenic landscapes and classic castle-town Japan without the crowds.
