The desert city of Yazd is known for its wind towers, ancient water system of qanats and as a Zoroastrian centre. Originally growing due to its place on the Silk Road, as a trading post, Yazd developed a thriving textile and carpet industry. The mud brick old city with its high walls and sprawling bazaar is still present and home to the impressive Masjid e Jameh. The wind towers, or badgirs, an ancient form of air conditioning still litter the skyline.
