Tour Itinerary
Fly to Chiang Rai, via Bangkok.
Arrive Chiang Rai meet the guide and drive to visit Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple and is constructed entirely in white plaster and mirrored glass mosaics. Overnight in Chiang Khong Teak Garden.
After breakfast depart Thailand and drive to the border with Laos at Houay Xai. Complete imigration formalities and board the Luang Say cruise boat and start heading south down the Mekong. En-route a stop is made to learn about the rural Lao life of local hill tribe settlements. Enjoy a buffet lunch onboard while cruising towards Pakbeng hopefully arriving in time for a sunset drink from the lodge. Overnight at Luangsay Lodge. (B,L,D)
This morning depart the lodge and cruise downriver to the Kamu Lodge, home for tonight. The lodge features 20 private en-suite tents. This afternoon you can choose from a range of activities including rice planting and cultivation, gold panning and traditional fishing techniques. Enjoy dinner and overnight at the lodge. (B,L,D)
Enjoy breakfast in the cool morning air and enjoy free time at leisure. Maybe visit the nearby local village with your guide. After lunch at the Lodge, depart around 2pm for the cruise down to Luang Prabang. Enjoy the evening at leisure. Overnight Maison Dalabua. (B,L)
This morning take a tuk-tuk to the electric powered bike station for a short briefing on how to use these fun bikes before heading off on an emissions-free tour of the city. Visit the former Royal Palace, Wat Visoun and Wat Xieng Thong. Enjoy lunch in a great local restaurant before riding out to Phosy Market to explore the fresh produce stalls. Continue on to Ock Pop Tock, a non-profit organisation seeking to preserve traditional weaving techniques. Return along the riverside to the city and visit the Arts and Ethnology Centre. Drop off the bikes and enjoy the evening at leisure. (B,L)
An early start today for a special visit down to watch the monks collecting alms. The sight of a line of orange-robed monks walking barefoot to receive offerings from the community is an iconic image of Laos. Return to the hotel for breakfast and then depart to visit the Khuang Si Waterfalls driving through beautiful countryside to get there. The falls cascade down a multilevel limestone formation creating a series of turquoise blue pools perfect for a dip on a hot day. There is also a bear sanctuary which is worth a visit. Return to the city and climb to the top of Mount Phousi, a climb of 328 steps but offering panoramic views of the city from the top. (B)
Drive north this morning to the remote province of Oudamxay with a stop en-route for a picnic lunch. Drive through the capital, Oudamxay, now an important trading hub and check into the Muang La Resort. The resort is built next to a natural hot spring and facilities include a spa, sauna and steam room. Enjoy a sumptuous dinner surrounded by the sounds of the countryside. (B,L,D)
Today head out in a 4WD to discover ethnic tribes of northern Laos. Visit an isolated Ikhos village where the people originate from Yunnan and Tibet and who have seen very few foreigners. The guide will tell you about their ancient cultures passed down through generations. After a picnic lunch visit the Hmong village of Ban Tauser accessed via a stunning panoramic viewpoint. Return to the resort for dinner and overnight in Muang La Resort. (B,L,D)
After breakfast drive to the Nam Ou River and board a longtail boat for a cruise down the most scenic stretch of river in Laos. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the journey and late afternoon arrive at Nong Khiaw, famed for the dramatic limestone mountains surrounding it. Check into the Nong Kiau Riverside Lodge and enjoy sunset over the river. (B,L)
Return to Luang Prabang today and transfer to the airport for the return flight to the UK, via Bangkok. (B)
