Vipava Valley Short Break

Arrive in Ljubljana and collect your rental car from the airport. Make your way to the Vipava Valley region (approx. a one-hour drive). Spend four nights at your accommodation. Those arriving on a morning flight will have the time to stop at Postojna Caves, one of Europe’s largest and most impressive karst cave systems, and Predjama Castle, a dramatic Renaissance fortress built directly into a towering cliff face.

After a morning at leisure, you will be transferred to Nova Gorica railway station to join the Vipava Wine Train- offering a memorable journey through one of Slovenia’s most enchanting wine regions. Travelling aboard a vintage train, over five hours, you're are treated to sweeping views of rolling vineyards, picturesque stone villages and the dramatic Karst landscape. Along the route, local winemakers step aboard to share stories, offer tastings and introduce the valley’s distinctive indigenous varieties. Stops are made for a walk around the town of Ajdovščina and at a boutique winery to allow travellers to stretch their legs and sample more exceptional wines paired with regional delicacies. Transfer back to your accommodation after the jounrey.

*The train operates in Spring & Autumn on select Saturdays so the itinerary will need to be organised around this. Alternatively there are several other food and wine tours available to choose from if your dates do not match. 
 

Centuries-old wine tradition and simple but delicious local food make Vipava Valley a perfect destination for food lovers. You will collected from your accommodation by your local private guide. Set out on a food tour to taste traditional prosciutto, goat milk products, and indigenous wine varieties from this area. You will meet and discuss the production processes with passionate farmers, prosciutto producers, and winemakers that work with nature, and follow old local traditions. Return to your accommodation afterwards. (B, food tasting)

Today you may like to venture down to the coast in your rental car for time spent in the pretty Venetian walled town of Piran. Take a walk through its maze like tangle of streets, stopping for coffee and a delicious seafood lunch. Alternatively, head to the Strunjan Nature Park for dramatic cliffs, peaceful walking trails and secluded pebble beaches. (B)

Make your way back to Ljubljana Airport to return the rental car and take flight back to the UK. Alternatively, opt to spend more time in the delightful city of Ljubljana where excellent restaurants line the pretty squares and riverside. (B)
