With the new BMI/Lufthansa direct flights from London Heathrow, Dresden is the perfect choice for a weekend break.  Meticulous reconstruction has restored much of Dresden to its former glory. Admire the dome of the 18th-century Frauenkirche, once again dominating the skyline, and promenade along the banks of the Elbe through the historical heart of the city. Wherever you look you will be impressed by the elegant Renaissance and Baroque buildings, particularly the Zwinger Palace.

Art lovers should head for the Gemaldegalerie Alter Master, Grune Gewolbe in Dresden Castle and the new Albertinum, with their internationally acclaimed collections. Dress up for a performance of the Dresden State Orchestra at the SemperOper, but be sure to book ahead. Head for Konigstrasse for high-end shops and dining or relax in one of the many cellar bars or beer gardens.
