Kinosaki Onsen Holidays

Kinosaki Onsen is a traditional hot spring town on Japan’s Sea of Japan coast, around two and a half hours from Kyoto by train. With a history stretching back over 1,300 years, it is known for its classic ryokan, willow-lined canal and relaxed, old-fashioned atmosphere. The town is centred around seven public bathhouses, each with its own character, encouraging visitors to stroll through the streets in yukata and wooden sandals as part of the experience.

What makes Kinosaki Onsen special is its emphasis on simplicity and tradition. Bathing is unhurried and communal, with a strong focus on etiquette, ritual and wellbeing rather than luxury spa treatments. Visitors can try multiple onsen in one stay, enjoy seasonal local cuisine such as Tajima beef and fresh seafood, and slow down in a setting that feels largely unchanged. It suits travellers looking for cultural immersion, gentle wellness experiences and a quieter side of Japan away from the major cities.
