Pakbeng, located halfway between Luang Prabang and Huay Xai, serves as a rest station for travellers along the Mekong River. Despite the absence of nightlife, it provides a tranquil setting and beautiful sunset views. The town, which means'mouth of the river' in Lao, is a major transportation centre accessible by the Luang Say Cruise. Originally a trade post, it today regards tourism as a major source of revenue. The town is modest, yet it has temples, a local market, and guesthouses. The weather fluctuates, with winter being the busiest season. While power outages are regular, Pakbeng is quite safe. Most travellers spend the night here on their way to Luang Prabang, coming by slow boat or speedboat. Because of the town's small size, it's best to walk about.
