Situated just south of the Arctic Circle lies Ammassalik. With around 1,700 inhabitants, it is the only town of any size on Greenland’s rugged and isolated east coast. Known to residents as ‘Tasiilaq’, the town is located in a protective fjord. Accessed by a short, scenic helicopter ride from Kulusuk, cross the ice-filled sea separating these two mountainous islands and admire spectacular landscapes ringed by high mountains, sweeping glaciers and ice-filled fjords. Like many towns in Greenland, the old Inuit traditions of hunting and fishing are still maintained in Ammassalik and the townscape is characterised by small wooden houses painted in bold colours.
