Trakai Holidays

Set among a chain of lakes just outside Vilnius, Trakai is one of Lithuania’s most iconic and atmospheric destinations. Best known for its fairytale island castle and tranquil waterside setting, the town offers a perfect blend of history, culture and scenic beauty, making it a highlight of any Lithuanian or Baltic itinerary.

The centrepiece of Trakai is Trakai Island Castle, a beautifully restored medieval fortress set on Lake GalvÄ— and connected to the shore by wooden bridges. Once the seat of Lithuania’s Grand Dukes, the castle is one of the country’s most recognisable landmarks and provides insight into Lithuania’s medieval past, with striking views across the surrounding lakes.

Trakai is also renowned for its unique Karaite heritage, brought to the region in the 14th century. Traditional wooden houses line the streets, and visitors can sample kibinai - the savoury Karaite pastries that have become a local speciality. With its combination of historic architecture, lakeside scenery and distinctive cultural traditions, Trakai is one of Lithuania’s most memorable destinations.
