The capital of Jordan since just 1921, Amman has grown in to a sprawling city set across a series of hills.
The downtown area has been inhabited for over 9000 years, evidence of the Romans stands out with their large theatre and temple and the Umayyad influence can be seen with the remains of the palace complex. The streets around the Citadel and Theatre are thriving with small businesses and are home to some great Jordanian cafes and street food.
Museums can be found throughout the city, one of the more interesting being the Royal Automobile Collection and as with all Jordanian towns and cities the neighbourhoods are dotted with mosques and the call to prayer can be heard ringing out from the minarets.
