Jeddah’s origins are pre-Islamic but the port was built in 646 and was the main entrance to the country for pilgrims heading to Mecca for the Hajj. Jeddah is still considered the most important gateway for pilgrims to Mecca and Medina. The old city Al Balad was founded in the 7th century and is UNESCO listed and home to traditional souks, mosques and winding alleys lined with coral stone and wooden houses.Modern Jeddah spreads for 30km along the Corniche, a popular place for locals to walk in the afternoon and evening. The Jeddah Sculpture Museum can be found here with 20 pieces of modern art and also the Floating Mosque.
