In World Heritage-listed Kotor, brooding mountains sweep down to the sea at the head of southern Europe’s deepest “fjord” (or Ria; to use the correct geological term) and Byzantine walls encircle the old town, which was once one of the best fortified towns on the Adriatic.
You can spend your days here whiling away the hours exploring the old town's tangle of maze-like streets and abundance of restaurants, cafes, boutiques and museums (the Cats Museum is a particular favourite!)
The energetic can climb the 1350 steps up to Saint John’s Fortress for truly some of the most spectacular views in the Balkans, whilst those looking to relax can simply take a stroll along the bay, setting up camp at a waterfront cafe or at one of the many local bathing areas.
