Sihanoukville, or Kompong Som as it is locally known after the small fishing village which was here first, is largely undeveloped and has a relaxed seaside atmosphere. The town has a range of beaches to explore or relax on depending on whether you’re looking for remote tranquillity or food stalls and beach umbrellas. Snorkelling opportunities lie off the coast on islands such as Koh Rom Samiem and Koh Ta Kiev or alternatively, head away from town to explore nearby Ream National Park. The only protected area in the country, the park offers a range of habitats including more pretty beaches, mangrove swamps and evergreen forest with some excellent bird-watching.
