With a tranquil countryside strewn with deep forests and bright sunflower fields Moldova is certainly a natural beauty, but it’s in its unique history and eccentric towns that mark it out as something different and well worth visiting. The capital city, Chisinau, is like a living museum of the Soviet era with its goose-stepping guards and Communist monuments, while the Moldovan love of wine manifests itself no more than in the vast Milestii Mici complex which houses the biggest wine cellar in the world.
A Moldova tour is also a fantastic opportunity to visit the frankly odd Transnistria region – a self-proclaimed socialist republic that is still clinging onto the country’s Soviet past.
