Swayambhunath, or ‘Monkey Temple’

Delve into the heart of the Kathmandu Valley’s cultural heritage with visits to its most revered sites. Wander the medieval courtyards of Durbar Square, where gilded rooftops and intricate wood carvings whisper stories of the Malla kings. At the House of the Living Goddess, you may glimpse the Kumari, a living symbol of divine power. Then ascend to Swayambhunath – the iconic ‘Monkey Temple’ – with sweeping views over the city and Buddha’s watchful eyes painted on its stupa. Journey onward to Thimphu, stopping to admire Tachogang Lhakhang - a hillside temple reached by a traditional iron bridge draped in fluttering prayer flags. Dochu La Pass

Set off on a rewarding cycling adventure from Thimphu to Punakha, ascending to the misty heights of Dochu La Pass (3,150m), where 108 chortens crown the ridge and tea is served with panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayas. From here, descend through forests and valleys on a scenic ride into the subtropical Punakha Valley. Leave the bikes behind for a peaceful stroll through emerald rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, a revered fertility temple linked to Bhutan’s beloved ‘Divine Madman’, before continuing to Punakha town for the evening.
