Spend four days exploring the tiny, lesser-visited island of Graciosa, staying at the Graciosa Resort Biosphere Island Hotel, where each room enjoys a private balcony overlooking the pool and the sea. Just a 15-minute walk from Santa Cruz, the island's major town, the Graciosa Resort is the perfect base from which to uncover both daily life and the natural environment.
The island, along with Corvo and Flores, is a designated UNESCO biosphere reserve so any development has to be undertaken with the natural environment in mind. As a result, the island's small resorts have been carefully designed to compliment their surroundings.
Our Azores Experiences are land-only packages that can be tailored in to any of our Azores holidays. They feature extra activities such as cooking tours, trips to some of the remotest - barely inhabited islands, visits to UNESCO World Heritage sites and more. Ask our Azores Specialists to add an Azores Experience into your holiday or for more information on the numerous experiences the Azores has to offer.
Arrive on the island of Graciosa at the island's main town, Santa Cruz. Transfer to the Graciosa Resort Biosphere Island Hotel and check in for three nights.
After breakfast, today enjoy a sightseeing tour of Graciosa island with a private driver and guide. Set off in the direction of the Caldera to experience the island's rare geological phenomenon, a volcanic lake tucked away inside a cave. Head up to the crater rim to enjoy spectacular views across the whole island and the coast, giving a scale of just how tiny this Azorean landmass is. Continue to the fishing port of Praia, home to typically Azorean windmills, and visit the natural geothermal baths. Head west to Serra Branca and Vitoria to reach the viewpoint of Farol da Ponta da Barca, and then also admire the views from Monte de Ajuda. Return to Santa Cruz and transfer back to the hotel. (B)
Enjoy today at leisure to explore the island at your own pace. Perhaps opt to hire a car and drive around the coast or to explore some of the island's small rural communities. You could spend today relaxing by the pool of the Graciosa Resort or you could walk down into Santa Cruz to explore the town with its museum, cobbled streets, main square and seafront. Alternatively, choose to make the walk up to the summit of Mount Nossa Senhora da Ajuda to enjoy wonderful panoramas over Santa Cruz. Here find three chapels and an old disusedwhale hunting viewpoint. (B)
After breakfast, check out of the hotel and prepare to depart from Graciosa.
