Discover the Faroese capital Tórshavn and its remote surroundings on this short fly-drive holiday, ideal for those looking for a long weekend adventure.
Drive past colourful Nordic houses and through picturesque fishing villages, meet friendly locals and sail alongside towering cliff faces searching for the breeding areas of puffins and other sea birds. In Tórshavn, stroll through the historic old town and marvel at the turf-roofed houses. When the mood strikes, take to the road and explore the various islands (easily accessible by undersea tunnel or short ferry rides) to your heart's content. Visit tiny remote villages and take in sweeping views unlike anywhere else in the world.
This break is based at Hotel Brandan, conveniently located in the capital, which is an excellent base for joining day excursions or for taking a variety of day trips out by car to truly appreciate and take in as much of the beautiful and fascinating archipelago as possible.

Fly into Vagar airport and collect the hire car. Start exploring right away, driving west to visit the remote village of Gasadalur, which sits prettily on a cliff side surrounded by mountains and dramatic scenery on both sides. Until 2004, this village was cut off from the rest of the island. The only access was by foot over the mountain, but now a tunnel through the mountain allows visitors to experience the unspoilt charm of this village. In the afternoon, drive to the capital, Tórshavn and check into the hotel.

Spend the morning in and around the charming capital and discover a variety of restaurants, cafés and handicraft shops. Stroll along the harbourside, visit the Nordic House, and explore the old town with its many turf-roofed houses including Tinganes, the world's oldest parliament. In the afternoon, drive to the historical buildings in Kirkjubøur. See Ólav's church, the oldest church in the Faroes dating from 1111, as well as the ruins of St. Magnus Cathedral. (B)

Today, we recommend driving to Vestmanna to join an option boat tour (not included) of the renowned Vestmanna Bird cliffs to see the puffins and bird life that nest in the 2,000 feet high vertical cliffs. Afterwards, drive to picturesque Saksun and then on to Tjørnuvík for an excellent view of the iconic Giant and the Witch rock formations. From here, continue north, past the highest mountain in the Faroes (Slættaratindur, 882m) to the charming village of Gjógv. (B)
Speak with your Regent Faroes specialist about adding the Vestmanna boat excursion to your holiday

Today is free to fill however you'd like. Perhaps add an optional excursion to your holiday, like a cruise on the popular Nordlysid schooner, or the ferry to the small island of Nolsoy, or the newly opened subsea tunnel to Sandoy, which feels as if it has a slower pace of life. Alternatively, travel through the subsea tunnel to Eysturoy where a ferry (20 minutes) runs between Klaksvík to the beautiful and rugged northern island of Kalsoy. (B)

Drive to Vagar Airport to return the hire car before checking in for the flight back to the UK. (B)
