This small-group tour is ideal for adventurous travellers curious about Saudi Arabia’s recent opening to tourism. Designed to showcase the country’s most important heritage sites and natural landmarks, the itinerary blends archaeology, architecture and culture with a strong sense of place. With travel logistics taken care of - including domestic flights, overland transfers and a high-speed train - you’ll be free to focus on exploring this lesser-known corner of the Middle East.
Over the course of a week, you’ll visit four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, from the mud-brick alleys of Al Dir’iyah to the rock-cut tombs of Hegra in AlUla. Explore the old towns of Jeddah and AlUla, see the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, and watch the sun set behind the dramatic Elephant Rock.
With its mix of ancient wonders and striking desert landscapes, this is a rare opportunity to experience the Kingdom's past and present - guided by regional experts and welcomed by locals keen to share their stories.
Touch down in Saudi Arabia’s capital, where a local representative will meet you and take you to your hotel. Once settled in, meet your fellow travellers and your guide, who will be with you as you explore the Kingdom’s heritage, landscapes and culture over the coming days.
Discover the contrasting sides of Riyadh, where futuristic skyscrapers rise above centuries-old heritage. Begin in the city centre, exploring bustling souks and pausing at Masmak Fort - an iconic mud-brick stronghold tied to the Kingdom’s founding story. Continue to Al Dir’iyah, a UNESCO-listed site and the original home of the Saudi royal family, where traditional Najdi architecture lines the restored alleys. End the day with panoramic views from the Kingdom Tower, one of Riyadh’s most striking landmarks, offering a glimpse into the capital’s ambitious vision for the future. (B)
Fly from Riyadh to AlUla, a region of extraordinary natural beauty and archaeological significance. Surrounded by towering sandstone cliffs sculpted by wind and time, AlUla feels worlds away from the capital’s bustle. Explore the atmospheric Old Town, once a resting point for pilgrims, where narrow lanes lead to artisan shops and shaded cafés. In the late afternoon, visit the striking Elephant Rock - Jabal Alfil - whose unique shape and golden setting make it a memorable spot to watch the sun dip below the horizon. This desert landscape marks the beginning of a deeper journey into Saudi Arabia’s ancient past. (B,D)
Spend the day exploring the extraordinary heritage of AlUla, home to Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. At Hegra, once a thriving Nabataean city, you’ll see remarkably well-preserved tombs carved into golden sandstone cliffs - an echo of nearby Petra, but without the crowds. Continue to the ancient kingdom of Dadan to view the Lion Tombs, their carvings guarding the rocky hillsides. At Jabal Ikmah, often called an open-air library, admire centuries-old inscriptions etched into stone - offering insight into language, trade and belief systems of early Arabian civilisations. It’s a journey deep into the region's roots. (B,D)
Travel overland to Medina, one of Islam’s holiest cities and the burial place of the Prophet Muhammad. While non-Muslims cannot enter the Prophet’s Mosque, you’ll pause to admire its grandeur from the outside and learn about its religious significance. After lunch, visit the Seera Museum, which offers a thoughtful introduction to the life of the Prophet and early Islamic history. A traditional shared lunch will be taken with a Saudi famly. After this authentic moment of local immersion, board a high-speed train to Jeddah. On arrival, check into your hotel and, if time allows, enjoy a walk along the Corniche, where modern art installations meet Red Sea views. (B,L)
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia’s vibrant coastal city, lives up to its nickname “Jeddah Ghair”, meaning “Jeddah is different.” Begin at the Taybat Museum, where you’ll uncover the city’s rich history and heritage. Next, wander through Al-Balad, the atmospheric old town, with its coral stone houses and intricately carved wooden balconies lining narrow lanes. In the afternoon, enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Corniche, taking in the striking views of the Red Sea and the iconic Floating Mosque. Conclude your day with a farewell dinner by the water at the Marina Yacht Club. (B,D)
Transfer to the airport for your flight back to the UK. (B)
