Northern Lights in Finland

Northern Lights in Finland

With a winter that lasts around 200 days, the northern lights can be seen painting ribbons of colour across the sky from late August until mid-April in Finnish Lapland. Wrap up warm and hunt for them on an evening reindeer sled safari or lie back in your glass-domed igloo and watch the starry night sky from the comfort of your own bed.

Sitting directly on the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland where every one of the 200 days of winter feels as festive as the last. Ideal for families, amenities are close to hand, from the bars and restaurants of the compact centre to the countless winter activities in the surrounding wilderness. Try your hand at mushing a husky sled or visit a reindeer farm and enjoy a sleigh ride through the snowy fells.

For those looking for a more remote experience, fly further north to Ivalo or Kittilä where a short drive from the airport delivers unending Lappish wilderness. Here, isolation plays a part in providing the ideal conditions for aurora viewing.

I once abandoned my dinner in Rovaniemi when a waitress spotted the northern lights! We climbed on to the roof of the Sky Hotel to watch the aurora dance above the town and forested fells.

I've seen the northern lights every time I've visited Finland. The sparsely-populated countryside here is so silent it's the perfect place to watch them immersed in peaceful nature.

For a memorable way to experience the northern lights, spend the night in one of Finland's incredible hotels, designed with the aurora in mind, try a glass-roofed igloo or a treehouse.
