A recent visit to the second hand book shops of Hay-on-Wye resulted in the purchase of many fine old travel books. As I settled down to read “A Hot Summer in St. Petersburg” by Duncan Fallowell, which from the inscription inside the front cover appears to be a Christmas gift to a woman named Kath from her mum in 1995, I found a scrap of newspaper used as a bookmark.
It was amazing to read this excerpt, which must have inspired the purchase of the book, to find that the author Duncan had visited Russia courtesy of Regent Holidays! We think this must have been in 1994 when we planned this trip for Duncan – even our phone number was the same… and nostalgia brought us back to a time where Russian visas were only £17 (through our office) and airport taxes were only £10!! Those were the days….
