Soroca Holidays

Soroca is one of Moldova’s most historic and atmospheric towns, set on the banks of the Dniester River in the north of the country near the Ukrainian border. Best known for its impressive medieval fortress, Soroca offers a glimpse into Moldova’s past and a striking contrast to the capital. The town has long been a strategic crossing point and trading hub, giving it an importance that belies its modest size today.

The star attraction is Soroca Fortress, a perfectly preserved 15th-century circular stronghold built during the reign of Stephen the Great. Its thick stone walls, towers and battlements remain remarkably intact and can be explored both inside and out, with sweeping views over the river. Nearby, the Candle of Gratitude monument stands high above the Dniester, commemorating Moldovan culture and heritage and offering panoramic vistas across the surrounding countryside.

Soroca is also known for its vibrant Roma community, particularly in the hillside district known as Gypsy Hill, where extravagant mansion-like homes reflect wealth, tradition and strong family ties. Combined with peaceful riverside walks, local markets and a slower pace of life, Soroca provides a compelling cultural stop that showcases a different, deeply authentic side of Moldova.
