Travel between Sweden and Finland on this brand-new, sustainable rail adventure along the Bothnian Coastal Route. Glide from Stockholm’s vibrant streets to the cultural hub of Umeå, continue north to Luleå’s waterfront and UNESCO-listed Gammelstad, then journey to the border town of Haparanda. Cross into Finland to explore Oulu, the European Capital of Culture in 2026, and the lively Vaasa. Lower your carbon footprint while experiencing fertile plains, lively marketplaces, and historic harbour towns, all connected by comfortable sleeper and regional trains.

This rail adventure is based on spending 6 nights at carefully selected 3-star hotels and 1 night in a private sleeping compartment on the overnight train from Stockholm to Umeå, but there are plenty of other alternative hotel options to meet every taste, including the unique Treehotel in Luleå.

DAY 1
FLY TO STOCKHOLM
Stockholm

Fly from the UK to Stockholm and take the airport express train into the bustling city centre to check in for one night. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore this exciting capital.

DAY 2
STOCKHOLM TO UMEÅ
STOCKHOLM TO UMEÅ

Spend the day exploring Stockholm with your Stockholm City Pass, which includes access to both the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus and boat. It's an easy way to get your bearings and discover the city's beautiful archipelago. In the evening, head to Stockholm Central Station to board the overnight train to Umeå and sleep in your private compartment. (B)

DAY 3
DISCOVER UMEÅ

Wake up in Umeå, the largest city in northern Sweden, also known as the 'City of Birches'. Check in at your hotel for one night and spend the day exploring this vibrant destination. Umeå offers a rich mix of experiences - from Sámi traditions and the world’s northernmost opera house to a sculpture park with over 40 artworks, fascinating museums, and a thriving food scene. (B)

DAY 4
UMEÅ TO LULEÅ

In the morning, make your way to Umeå Railway Station and board your train to Luleå. Upon arrival, check in at your centrally located hotel and prepare to explore this modern city. Discover the contrast between the contemporary city centre and the historic charm of Gammelstad Church Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Luleå’s original old town. (B)

DAY 5
ACROSS THE FINNISH BORDER

Take a morning train to the Swedish city of Haparanda, then cross the Finnish border by taxi to Tornio. Discover this unique twin city, where Haparanda and Tornio meet at the northern tip of the Bothnian Bay and the mighty Torne River flows into the sea. Continue by coach to Oulu and check in for a two-night stay at your hotel. (B)

DAY 6
OULU
Oulu

Today visit Oulu, which is European Capital of Culture 2026. This city is celebrated for its creativity and innovation, from leading the way in modern mobile technology to hosting the world-famous Air Guitar World Championships. The city centre is compact, making it perfect for exploring on foot. (B)

DAY 7
OULU TO VAASA
Bothnian Coastal Route

Continue your journey by train to Vaasa, a charming city whose cobblestone marketplace forms its lively heart. Browse stalls brimming with fresh summer produce, or savour local flavours at a welcoming café. Immerse yourself in Vaasa’s vibrant urban culture, then stroll from Market Square to the seafront in just minutes. Take in sweeping coastal views as you cycle, walk, or join the locals for a leisurely picnic. (B)

DAY 8
FLY TO THE UK

Today is free at leisure until it is time to transfer independently to Vaasa airport for your flight home. (B)
