Looking for a romantic getaway? Look no further than the tranquil north-west coast of the Azorean island of São Miguel. Here, nestled between the verdant mountains and the azure sea, you’ll find the impressive Santa Barbara Eco-Beach Resort - the ideal place to relax and unwind while getting acquainted with the amazing sights and tantalising cuisine of the largest island in the archipelago.
The 4-star resort features studios as well as one and two bedroom villas located on different levels of the grounds - all set amongst beautifully landscaped gardens.
Each contemporary villa, decorated in a modern Scandinavian style, features a double bedroom, living area, and kitchenette. Not to mention spectacular sea or garden views which can be enjoyed from your own private hot tub!
Spend leisurely days exploring the coast and relaxing on the beach or taking a dip in the outdoor saltwater swimming pool while enjoying a drink and a nibble from the beach club. In the evening, indulge in local specialities at the hotel’s restaurant and bar where each meal comes with a side of mesmerising coastal views.
This romantic escape is perfectly accompanied by a hire car for effortless exploration of the island. Discover São Miguel's emerald crater lakes, dramatic lava fields and awe-inspiring scenery and gain understanding of the archipelago’s intriguing volcanic history and geology, all without ever needing to travel far from your tranquil hideaway.
No trip to São Miguel would be complete without a visit to the spectacular crater lakes that make up Sete Cidades on the island’s western side. The drive itself is punctuated by picturesque villages and incredible viewpoints for taking in the rolling-hills and the stunning turquoise lake.
A trip to the thermal valley of Furnas is another must-do. Two volcanic calderas dominate the landscape in this area, one of which holds an impressive emerald lake. Visit the stunning botanical garden and take a dip in the natural hot water pool and enjoy a traditional cozido lunch – a local speciality of meat and vegetables which are cooked together in a large pot that is buried underground. The meal itself is actually cooked by the volcanic steam and vapours produced by the area’s incredible thermal activity! Definitely a unique lunchtime experience!
While one could easily spend weeks on the island exploring all of its various wonders we do recommend setting aside at least one afternoon to take to the sea in search of the over 20 species of whales and dolphins that reside (or migrate through) the waters surrounding the island. A day on the water promises to be a memorable experience. The sperm whale is famous for making appearances in these parts and often breaches the sea’s surface for a full 8 minutes in between dives – ensuring everyone on board is able to obtain that perfect photo to travel home with.
Regardless of how you spend your time we’re certain the days will simply melt away leaving you to travel home fully relaxed and rejuvenated and with a heart full of incredible memories from your romantic escape.
