The Sepik river flows for 1126 kilometres through a rugged landscape largely unscarred by any kind of road network and populated by tribal communities whose culture has remained unchanged for generations. The river provides a living to many in these stilt-house communities and most travel is done via the river tributaries. The Sepik region is home to some of PNG's most skilled craftsmen especially in terms of carvings and the building of haus tambarans or spirit houses. There is an abundance of indigenous birdlife in the area including stunning birds of paradise and the beaches around the more populated regional capital of Wewak offer great snorkelling and swimming.
