Stay in Ilulissat, home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ilulissat Ice Fjord and one of the most active glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere, this is time to immerse yourself in the beautiful Arctic nature. This summer a new visitor centre called Ilulissat Ice Fjord will open and look ahead to the future, with a focus on sustainability. As well as regulating visitor flow to help preserve the glacier, it will educate travellers about the impact of climate change.
Flights are from Copenhagen via Kangerlussuaq to Ilulissat. On this special offer package add an excursion package (which includes four excursions as per the itinerary).
Fly from Copenhagen to Ilulissat. On arrival in Ilulissat transfer to the Hotel Arctic for check-in for 3 nights. Meet our local representative for a welcome meeting.
Optional Excursion: Ilulissat City Walk
A local guide will share the history of the city, a little bit about Greenlandic culture and what's modern life like some 300 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. Make several stops; meet the fishermen at the harbour, the hunters at "brættet" and pass by the famous polar explorer Knud Rasmussen's birthplace.. Ilulissat was founded in 1741 and is today Greenland's third largest town with over 4500 inhabitants.
This morning enjoy a hearty breakfast with stunning views of the town and bay. Ilulissat means "Icebergs" in Greenlandic – it’s not difficult to see why! Today explore Ilulissat further or book both of these optional excursions. (B)
Optional Excursion: Iceberg Sightseeing Cruise
This morning sail among the icebergs in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ilulissat Ice Fjord. Every year, more than 48 km3 of ice flows into the fjord. The result is a ‘showroom’ of gigantic icebergs, which can be more than 100 meters on each side and with a height on more than 100 meters above the water surface. These giants run aground at the end of the fjord, and that gives us the opportunity to sail among them.
Optional Excursion: Walk to Sermermiut Settlement
Beautiful icebergs are the setting for the old settlement Sermermiut, located one and a half kilometres south of Ilulissat. For 4000 years, different Inuit cultures lived in the settlement and today you can still see many remains that indicate their presence. Listen to the guide’s stories about Inuit people’s life and traditions before the Europeans came to Greenland. Walk along a wooden walkway and see turf hut ruins and permafrost.
This morning after breakfast, perhaps explore Ilulissat further or head out on this optional excursion. Don't forget to look to the skies when darkness falls in Ilulissat as northern lights can appear from October to March. (B)
Optional Excursion: Sail to Ilimanaq, Disko Bay
Today sail to the southern part of Disko Bay and to the tiny settlement of Ilimanaq. Keep an eye out for whales en route and of course admire icebergs in the UNESCO Heritage Site of Ilulissat Ice Fjord. Ilimanaq is a traditional, Greenlandic village where people still live from hunting and fishing. There will be time to visit some of the listed buildings which date back to the 1750s, as well as exploring the surrounding nature.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the flight back to the UK. (B)
