If you're looking for a once-in-a-lifetime journey, this voyage by private train might be just the thing for you. As you travel from Almaty in Kazakhstan to Ashgabat in Turkmenistan, you will discover the manifold cultures along the legendary Silk Road and wonder at the numerous ancient landmarks that mark the route. Among them, you'll find more than six UNESCO World Heritage Sites. 

Stretching from the Caspian Sea to the Tien Shan Mountains, the Central Asian countries of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are richly endowed with history and culture, and you'll be given a taste of them all from the comfort of a private train.

Travelling the Silk Road by train is a safe, comfortable and convenient way of experiencing this historic route, with no internal flights, no long bus rides on dusty roads and no hauling your luggage from city to city. All sightseeing and meals are provided, meaning you can relax and get the most out of your journey without having to worry about a thing. Carriages on the privately chartered train have up to nine compartments, and you can choose from five different categories of compartment.

DAY 2
ALMATY
ALMATY

Arrive in Almaty, Kazakhstan and transfer to your hotel for the first night. Enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure to relax and take a stroll around the city. (B)

DAY 3
ALMATY
ALMATY

Meet up with the group and your guide in the morning and embark on a city tour of Almaty. The former capital of Kazakhstan boasts various architectural styles and plenty of treats for the eyes. Visit the Zenkov Cathedral, made entirely from wood without the use of nails, as well as the Central Mosque, and many other fascinating sights. In the afternoon, board the train, your home for the next four nights, and enjoy a welcome drink as you set off on the first leg of the journey. (B,L,D)

DAY 4
TURKESTAN
TURKESTAN

Arrive this morning in Turkestan, an important stop on the Silk Road. After breakfast on board, visit the beautiful Mausoleum of Kohja Ahmed Yasawi. In the afternoon, cross the Kazakh-Uzbek border and enter your second country of the trip. Watch the grassy steppe pass by from the comfort of the train as you head towards Tashkent. (B,L,D)

DAY 5
TASHKENT
TASHKENT

Uzbekistan's capital city awaits you. Head out with your guide and group to see old Tashkent, where the tiled mosques and madrassahs now house stalls of local craftsmen. Visit Independence Square and the War Memorial as well as Amir Timur Square and the Monument to the Victims of Political Repression. Before you climb back aboard for the evening, head to a local theatre to see a performance of traditional and classical music (programme permitting). Once back on board the train will continue through the night towards your next destination. (B,L,D)

DAY 6
SHAKRISABZ
SHAKRISABZ

This morning, the train will stop in the mountains to allow you to take a drive to the village of Katta Langar, where you will meet villagers and witness their traditions that have not changed for centuries, and visit the stunning 15th century Friday Mosque. Drive onto a second village to enjoy legendary Uzbek hospitality. Head back to the train for lunch as it bear you on to Shakrisabz, the birthplace of Tamerlane and home to yet more grand medieval buildings. Back aboard the train in the evening, enjoy dinner and tasting some Uzbek wines. (B,L,D)

DAY 7
SAMARKAND
SAMARKAND

Today you arrive in the mighty capital of Tamerlane: Samarkand. Disembark your train to see the astonishing buildings built under his command. Visit the Registan Square with three imposing madrassahs, the ruined Bibi Khanum Mosque and the tomb of Tamerlane himself with its huge turquoise dome. You have two nights in a Samarkand hotel to help you truly soak in the might and majesty of this once-glorious city. (B,L,D)

With another full day in Samarkand, you have time to visit the astonishing Ulug Beg Observatory, built by Tamerlane's grandson. Samarkand isn't all about its history, though. To prove it, you will visit a family of silk weavers who make exquisite carpets and learn about how ancient paper was made in the region. (B,L,D)

SAMARKAND TO KHIVA

This morning is at leisure to see a little more of Samarkand. Around noon, it's all back aboard the train to begin the desert crossing to the ancient city of Khiva, which will take all night. (B,L,D)

DAY 10
KHIVA
KHIVA

The walled city of Khiva in its desert setting is an oasis of beautiful historical buildings that can make you feel like you've stepped into a desert fairy tale, with its massive mud brick walls. Take a walking tour to explore the city visiting the palaces, mosques and minarets. Have lunch in the former Emir's Summer Palace and in the afternoon perhaps head up one of the minarets for a view out over the city. In the evening, climb back onto the train to move on to Bukhara. (B,L,D)

DAY 11
BUKHARA
BUKHARA

This morning you will disembark in the Uzbek city of Bukhara, another World Heritage Site. Bukhara has some 1,000 monuments and buildings that hark back to the golden age of the Silk Road. With your guide, visit some of the city's historical treasures including the madrassahs comprising the Lyabi Hauz Ensemble, the Kalyon Minaret, caravanserais and old trading domes. Also enjoy a folk performance in one of the madrassahs. Spend tonight in a hotel in the city. (B,L,D)

DAY 12
BUKHARA
BUKHARA

This morning spend time visiting splendid madrassahs and mausoleums before heading for the imposing Ark Citadel. Visit the Emir's Summer Residence before boarding the train and heading for the Turkmen frontier. (Overnight:Train;BLD)

DAY 13
MERV
MERV

Alight this morning in the Turkmen desert and visit the ancient site of Merv. These ruins were once once of the world's largest and most magnificent cities, and indeed the site has been home to five magnificent Silk Road cities over the centuries. Have lunch with a local family before boarding the train for the final time to Ashgabat. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel. (B,L,D)

DAY 14
ASHGABAT
ASHGABAT

In the morning, head out of Turkmenistan's capital city to visit the Parthian site of Old Nisa. Upon returning to Ashgabat, enjoy lunch and then explore this fascinating city with its mix of old and modern on show at every corner. Tour a number of the futuristic buildings as well as the national museum. Spend your last night in a hotel in Ashgabat. (B,L,D)

DEPARTURE

Transfer to the airport for your return flight. (B)
