Jane, our Senior Product Executive is here to talk about the best things to do in Sweden in the Summer.
“I have just returned from West Sweden exploring the Göta Canal as well as the largest lake in Sweden, Lake Vänern, one of the best places to visit in Sweden during summer. It was a fantastic trip, and the sun didn’t stop shining.” - Jane Slade, Senior Product Executive
Best for: getting to know authentic Swedish culture
As many Swedish people would say, you cannot experience a real summer in Sweden without partaking in the Midsummer festivities. Celebrated on the longest day of the year, June 22 (summer solstice), Swedish communities close their streets in anticipation of an entire day of singing, dancing, eating, drinking and much more.
For years, the Swedish community has been carrying out strong traditions of this colourful festival. One of the most famous traditions for this festival is dancing around the maypole that’s decorated in flowers, singing traditional Swedish songs.
This isn’t where the theatrical display ends; locals spend the entire day dancing and singing their traditional songs, including the ‘Frog Dance’. Locals dance the day and night away wearing the flower garlands that they have made themselves. Although Sweden is a country known for its festivals, this one is big enough to be celebrated as a Swedish holiday.
Best for: exploring something new
Just a stone’s throw away from Stockholm is a gateway to thousands of Swedish Islands that litter the Baltic Sea. With just a 20-minute boat ride away from the harbour, you’ll be hiking, exploring and dining on another island. Over 30,000 islands make up the Stockholm Archipelago, and each one offers something different for you to explore.
You’ll find some islands that are completely inhabited but sheathed by an abundance of nature to keep them alive. There’s no limit to your exploration on these untouched islands. From fishing on the rugged cliff edges and wildlife spotting on the sandy beaches, to swimming or kayaking in the cool surrounding waters, there’s plenty to do amongst the serene nature of the quiet islets.
However, the islands that are sprawled around Sweden are not all deserted. Around 150 islands in Sweden are home to civilisations that live within charming villages and quaint coastal towns comprised of pastel-coloured buildings that you can easily visit from Stockholm.
One of the most idyllic islands to visit is Vaxholm. As the capital of the archipelago and an island of abounding nature, there’s plenty to enjoy during your visit. Perfect for history buffs, you can explore the historic monuments from the 16th century Vaxholm Fortress to the 17th century Bogesund Castle. You’ll also find an array of ancient Viking relics around this island, including rune stones and grave sites. Learn more about the island’s past with a visit to one of the museums dotted around, and finish with a delicious meal in one of the many restaurants.
“Experiencing the cultures and atmospheres across multiple islands in one trip was like nothing else. To go from discovering the dense history of the lively Vaxholm island, to the sailor’s paradise island, Sandhamn was a great summertime activity. To be closer to nature, Grinda is the perfect island, with picturesque wild swimming spots to enjoy and ample wildlife to spot.” – Jane Slade, Senior Product Executive
Best for: adventures in the scenic Swedish mountains
If you’re a lover of outdoor activities, Abisko National Park is an outstanding region of rustic adventures. You can spend an entire summer’s day here, hiking its picturesque trails to gaze at the majestic mountains and weave through the lush alpine forests. While the sun is shining and the sky is clear of clouds in the summer, you’re treated to awe-inspiring views of the rugged landscapes of the Kungsleden Trail. This route weaves through northern Sweden, crossing over scenic lakes and long stretches of mountain and forest-framed paths. If you opt for the Lapporten Valley, you’ll get an incredible view of the ‘U’ shaped valley located just outside of the national park.
If you enjoy catching glimpses of wildlife in their natural environment, you’ll find a wealth of animals throughout the diverse flora and fauna of this national park. Keep your eyes to the sky and trees to see lively birdlife such as owls, cranes and woodpeckers. Moose and reindeer are also common in this park, so tread lightly so you don’t scare them off for a longer sighting.
