Less than two and a half hours from the UK, Croatia is one of Europe’s top ‘must-visit’ destinations.

Travellers looking to explore the Balkans will discover a magnificent azure coastline strewn with over a thousand tiny islands (some of which you may never have even heard of) and discover immaculately preserved Venetian-era settlements illuminated around picturesque harbours – some recognisable from the award-winning TV series, Game of Thrones – all illuminated by the coveted sunshine of the Mediterranean.

For travellers who like to combine their historic explorations with a relaxing Mediterranean lifestyle, Croatia has it all. From the natural beauty of the stunning coast, deep forests, mountainous national parks, terraced waterfalls and rivers primed for bathing, to mediaeval cities, ancient fortresses and Roman remains, few visitors ever fail to fall for Croatia's charms.

The walled cities of Dubrovnik and Split captivate visitors with their old squares and narrow alleyways which beg to be explored. And both are perfectly situated as perfect jumping-off points for deeper explorations of the country.

In July and August, Dubrovnik’s streets come alive with the six-week Summer Festival, where open-air performances enjoy a stunning backdrop of the historic old town. Whilst in February, travellers can avoid the summer crowds and watch with front-row seats as locals in traditional dress celebrate St Blaise Day with parades and folk dances.

First-time visitors to Croatia should head to Split. There aren't many other cities in the world that can boast a currently inhabited Roman palace! It's easy to spend a whole day just wandering through the city's hidden cobbled passages. Split does come with its crowds, though, so this is well contrasted later with an exploration of Marjan Hill and its secluded rocky beaches.

Ellie's Tips
With fresh seafood galore, Croatia is the place to try Dalmatia's favourite dish: cuttlefish ink risotto.
Visit Zlatni Rat 'Golden Horn' beach, one of the prettiest in the Adriatic, on Brac Island.
Nature-lovers should make a bee-line to Plitvice National Park, where sixteen lakes are framed by alpine forest.
